Medieval Segovia

On my first full day in Spain, I was graciously welcomed by brilliant sunshine, moderate temperatures (for American standards- the Spanish would consider it winter!), and the enchantment of the small town Segovia in Castile and Leon, just one hour way from Madrid...

Stepping into the town was like stepping into a time machine and going back to the medieval era in the Iberian Peninsula. With it's stunning views of royal alcazar palace, the mirador de la caneja, or the admirable Roman aqueduct, Segovia's charm will certainly leave an impression.

I was so lucky to have such amazing hosts who brought me along on this trip! Carlos' parents enthusiastically showed me around the narrow cobbled-stone streets including la Plaza Mayor, which is decorated in ancient statues and filled with rich history. In the afternoon, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch at Restaraunte Claustro de San Antonio Real, where I ordered Segovia's traditional dish called cochinillo which is a baby pig (sad, but it tasted delicious), roasted on an open fire until the meat has obtained tender perfection. So good!

The aqueduct, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was constructed without any cement holding the blocks of granite!

And of course, I was so happy to finally be reunited with the boy! Exploring the old Jewish quarter hand in hand and sharing breathtaking sunset views made our reunion that much better.

What's your favorite medieval city? Segovia is definitely at my top!

  1. I've been living in Madrid for over two years, and I still haven't been to Segovia! Your photos are lovely, and I'll have to try to visit it once the warm weather returns!
